Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Her father's death as a Carnival barker as a little girl and she was forced to support the family working both as a cook and server. Ruth attended the school in Boston's tenement region, which was the most deplorable. She left the school she attended after only two years in pursuit of a career as an actor. The path she chose did not come without challenges. When she was in New York, her first assignment was to shoot stills for crime magazines. acting work she longed for was not available. After a brief stint as a club hat girl after which she decided to come back home and quit the job she was working in. The New England Repertory Company was the first position she held as a regular actor. The company paid her performing during the daytime in the ushering department. She received a master's degree in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
